The Power of Low Vision Therapy by Sandy YESnick, MOTR/L, SCLV
(07/04/2011)
Recently, I had the privilege of helping Ben, a very special seven year old, who was born visually impaired. His parents, both pediatricians, had taken him across the country to neurologists, ophthalmologists and other eye care specialists but to no avail. Ben's ability to learn was affected, as he could not see the board and his reading skills were falling behind. Ben and I worked together using specialized glasses designed for the visually impaired and he responded immediately. In fact, his vision improved to the point that he was be able to see the school chalkboard...for the FIRST TIME IN HIS LIFE. We then worked together to address his reading inability. I trained him on the use of customized reading glasses. Two weeks later, his mom reported Ben's ability to read had improved from a second grade level to a fourth grade level, IN TWO WEEKS. For the first time, Ben would be able to see the chalkboard at school and read well above his grade level. I realized at that moment, I had not only improved his eyesight, but more importantly, I had positively affected his life. That is the power of Low Vision Therapy. It would be my privilege to help your family members with visual impairment due to macular degeneration, eye diabetes, glaucoma or stroke. Sincerely, Sandy
