This week I had the pleasure of visiting our visually impaired patient's family to have a 'training' lunch. We placed simulator glasses ( to simulate our patients impaired vision) on each family member. The family would experience life through their loved ones eyes, literally! The 'visually impaired' family members were asked to find their way from their table to the serving area and serve themselves lunch and then walk back to the table to eat. Each family member reported trouble identifying when to stop pouring their drink, finding their food on the plate and knowing how big of a bite they were taking. Our 'visually impaired lunch' provided a very real family educational experience. They learned how difficult an everyday task can be, one most of us take for granted. This patients' family now has a clear understanding regarding their family members visual challenges and how to retain their visual independence.
