Important Eye Care Tips

As humans, we rely on our five senses to get through the day. In today’s world, full of computer screens, traffic, and reading material, eyesight plays a particularly important role. We want our vision to last as long as possible to preserve our quality of life. This means that proper eye care under the supervision of a family eye doctor is essential.

Here are some important eye care tips you can use to keep your eyes healthy:

Get Regular Eye Exams

As with many medical conditions, eye problems typically respond best when caught early. That’s why eye exams should be a regular part of your year. At an eye center, the eye doctor will check your vision, but will also look for signs of age-related eye diseases such as macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetes.

Wear Sunglasses

We’ve all heard about the importance of sunscreen for protecting our skin, but did you know those same UV rays can also affect eyes? To protect your eyes, wear UV protection sunglasses whenever you are outside in bright sunlight.

Avoid Staring at Your Computer

As people spend more time looking at screens (smartphones, computers, TV, iPads), rates of eyestrain go up. Give your eyes a break every 20 minutes by focusing on something besides your screen, and ask your eye specialist if you need special glasses for computer work.

Eat a Healthy Diet

A healthy diet works wonders for the eyes. Whole foods such as fruits and veggies contain many nutrients and antioxidants that protect your eyes against disease. Research shows that Omega-3 fatty acids (commonly found in fish) may also promote eye health.

Treat Other Health Problems

Did you know that other health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases can affect your eyes? If you suffer from one of these conditions, talk to an eye specialist.
